<p><a title="William  Webb Ellis" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Webb_Ellis">William Webb Ellis</a> is often credited with the invention  of running with the ball in hand in 1823 at <a title="Rugby School" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_School">Rugby  School</a> when he allegedly caught the ball while playing football and  ran towards the opposition goal.
